Creating safer and more inclusive gathering spaces and playgrounds
Inspired by the sociability and connective nature of mushrooms, a new public art installation will act as a place for community members to connect. Fungi of the Woods will be an accessible, interactive, multi-generational and multi-sensory installation featuring two mushroom sculptures, whimsical seating and tall mushrooms that ring upon tapping. Kal’s RePlay Fund contributed $20,000 to fund the rubber used to cover the ground below the mushroom art structures; recycling 1,588 kg of rubber.
Burnhamthorpe Community Centre >Rubber matting at an archery range offers a range of benefits, creating a safer and more comfortable environment for archers. This durable, shock-absorbent material reduces impact on archers’ joints, which can help prevent injuries during prolonged practice. Rubber matting also protects arrows from damage by absorbing impact, reducing bounce-back, and prolonging the life of both arrows and targets. Kal’s RePlay Fund granted $20,000 to fully fund the new pathway; recycling 2,177 kg of rubber.
Archery Manitoba >The local daycare, is a beloved 50-year-old heritage building, which has been a cornerstone of this small Sechelt community for generations. By investing in durable, long-lasting recycled rubber shingles they preserve the building’s charm. Kal’s RePlay Fund granted $24,787.61 to fully fund the new rubber shingles, which recycled 22,000 kg of and diverted roughly 180 scrap tires from entering the landfill.
Teddy Bear Daycare >The new playground is designed for all children to have a space and opportunity to play. Designing the playground to be accessible helps to include not only children with disabilities but also their families, friends and caregivers: when one child cannot go to the playground, it has a ripple effect on multiple people in their social circle. Kal’s RePlay Fund granted $20,000 to partially fund the cost of pouring 32,000 kg of recycled rubber into the surface to keep more than 5,000 tires from entering the landfill.
